Origin and usage: The term is informal and not standardized; it emerged from discussions of digital fabrication and mass customization, where CNC milling, laser engraving, and additive manufacturing enable carved textures on plastic, wood, metal, or composite parts.

Techniques: Carved textures can be created by subtractive routing with CNC mills, laser etching, or by 3D printing sculpted surfaces that are later finished. In some cases, pre-formed textures are overmolded or post-processed to achieve the desired look. Materials range from wood and plastics to metals and composites.
