In practice, productionhave is used to gauge whether available capacity aligns with forecast demand. It differs from installed capacity in that it accounts for scheduled and expected availability rather than theoretical maximums. The concept helps planners assess short- and medium-term feasibility of production plans and to identify gaps between demand and the capacity that can realistically be mobilized.

Calculation of productionhave is typically expressed as a summary over resources: ProductionHave = sum_i Capacity_i × Availability_i × Utilization_i, where Capacity_i is the resource i’s maximum output rate, Availability_i is the fraction of time the resource is operable, and Utilization_i is the fraction of available time during which the resource is actively producing. A simple practical example: three machines, each with 100 units/day capacity, Availability 0.9, and Utilization 0.95 yield PH = 3 × 100 × 0.9 × 0.95 = 256.5 units/day.
