Procesvariationen refers to the deviations in the output of a process from its intended target, caused by a combination of random fluctuations and occasional disturbances. It is a central concept in quality management and operations research, and it is relevant across manufacturing, chemical processing, and service processes.

Variation is typically categorized into natural or common-cause variation, which is inherent in a stable process, and assignable or special-cause variation, which arises from identifiable sources such as a worn tool, a faulty component, or a change in material. Understanding the distinction helps in deciding how to respond and where to focus improvement efforts.

Common sources of procesvariationen include machine wear and calibration, tool life and setup changes, material variability, method deviations, operator differences, environmental conditions, and measurement error. Variation in outputs can affect product quality, process yield, and overall reliability.

Monitoring and analysis play a central role in managing procesvariationen. Statistical process control, control charts, and process capability analysis are used to detect, quantify, and track variation. Indices such as Cp and Cpk measure how well a process can meet specification limits, while design of experiments helps identify factors that influence variability.

Management and improvement strategies aim to reduce variation and keep it within acceptable limits. Approaches include standard operating procedures, preventive maintenance, supplier qualification, process redesign, and improvement methodologies such as Six Sigma and lean manufacturing. While not all variation can be eliminated, the goal is to minimize assignable variation and improve process capability.
