Procenat, often represented by the symbol "%", is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. It is a unitless quantity used to express a relative change or a proportion. The word "percent" originates from the Latin phrase "per centum," meaning "by a hundred."

To calculate a percentage, you divide the part by the whole and then multiply the result by 100. For example, if you have 20 apples and 10 of them are red, the percentage of red apples is (10 / 20) 100 = 50%. Percentages are widely used in various fields, including finance, statistics, and everyday life. They are commonly seen in interest rates, discounts, survey results, and growth rates.

Understanding percentages is crucial for interpreting data and making informed decisions. For instance, a 10% discount on an item means you save one-tenth of its original price. Similarly, an investment yielding a 5% annual return means it grows by 5% of its value each year. Conversely, a percentage can also represent a decrease, such as a 2% inflation rate indicating that prices have risen by 2% on average.

Converting between percentages, decimals, and fractions is a common mathematical operation. To convert a percentage to a decimal, you divide by 100 (e.g., 50% becomes 0.50). To convert a decimal to a percentage, you multiply by 100 (e.g., 0.50 becomes 50%).
