Procedurtexturer

Procedurtexturer, or procedural textures, are patterns or images generated algorithmically rather than captured from real-world photographs. They are defined by mathematical functions and parameters that describe color, density, scale, and repetition. Because the content is produced by code, procedural textures can be resolution independent and adaptable across different scenes and materials.

Common techniques include noise functions such as Perlin noise and Simplex noise, fractal Brownian motion, turbulence, and ridge noise; distance-based or Voronoi (Worley) textures that create cellular patterns; and multi-scale compositions that combine several octaves. These functions are often used inside shaders or texture generators, allowing real-time or offline rendering to produce materials like marble, wood, clouds, rock, and metallic surfaces. Many libraries provide tileable and infinite textures.

Implementation considerations: procedural textures are usually parameterized with scale, contrast, color mapping, lacunarity, persistence, and seed values. They enable detail without storing large bitmap images, reduce memory usage, and enable seamless tiling. However, they can require careful tuning to avoid artifacts such as repeating patterns or unnatural tiling, and some complex appearances demand hybrid approaches that combine procedural patterns with image-based inputs.

Applications: in practice, procedural textures are used in graphics pipelines for real-time rendering in video games, film and visual effects, architectural visualization, and product design. They provide flexibility, procedural material variation, and consistency across resolutions, at the cost of potential computational overhead and complexity.
