Problématický

Problématický is a Czech adjective derived from the Latin word problematus, ultimately stemming from the Greek protos (first) and problemata (questions). The term literally means “problematic” and is used to describe subjects, situations, or people that present difficulties or pose significant challenges. It can also be employed in a slightly negative sense, implying that something is troublesome or unsettling.

In everyday Czech, problématický is often synonymous with obtížný (difficult), komplikovaný (complicated), or nepochopený (misunderstood). It applies broadly: a problématický projekt refers to a project fraught with complications, while problématický člověk describes someone whose behavior or attitude creates persistent problems in personal or professional contexts. The word is also used in the field of psychology, medicine, and legal studies to denote cases that are complex or not easily classified.

The adjective agrees in gender, number, and case with the nouns it modifies. Thus it appears as problématické (neuter singular nominative) and problématickému (dative). Its comparative form is problématicky náročnější, and the superlative is problématicky nejvíce obtížný. Since the term entered Czech in the late 19th century, it has been widely accepted in academic writing and journalistic discourse.
