Probenlager

Probenlager, literally “sample storage,” is a term used in German-speaking scientific contexts to describe a facility, space, or system dedicated to storing physical samples and reference materials for current or future analysis. It encompasses both small-scale storage within a laboratory and larger archival systems, including biobanks and specimen repositories, as well as the associated data management that tracks each item.

The primary purpose of a probenlager is to preserve sample integrity, ensure traceability, and support reproducibility of analyses. Important elements include climate-controlled environments (such as ambient, refrigerated 2–8 degrees Celsius, frozen −20 to −80 degrees Celsius, or cryogenic storage in liquid nitrogen), appropriate containment and labeling, and secure access controls. A robust inventory system—often using barcodes, RFID, and a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)—records metadata, provenance, storage location, and disposition status.

Management and quality control are central to a probenlager. Procedures cover sample accessioning, handling, temperature monitoring, calibration of equipment, and regular audits. Documentation supports chain of custody and compliance with regulatory and ethical requirements, including retention and destruction policies.

Applications span many fields, including medical and pharmaceutical research, clinical laboratories, forensic science, environmental and geological analysis, and conservation science. In German contexts, a probenlager may refer to anything from a small, in-lab cabinet to a national or institutional biobank, united by the common goal of preserving samples for reliable, long-term use.
