Pretarsus
Pretarsus is the distal portion of a arthropod leg, located at the very tip beyond the last tarsal segment. In insects, the pretarsus is the terminal part of the leg and typically bears the most distal contact structures used for gripping and adhesion. Its common components are one or more claws and, in many taxa, an adhesive pad such as an arolium or pulvillus. The exact arrangement varies across groups: some lineages have only claws, others have paired claws, and some possess pads in addition to or instead of claws. This diversity reflects adaptations to different substrates and locomotor needs.
Functionally, the pretarsus enables gripping and attachment to a wide range of surfaces, including leaves, bark,
Across arthropods, the term pretarsus is used to describe the analogous distal tip of the leg, though
