Presynaptinen

Presynaptinen is the Finnish term describing the presynaptic side of a chemical synapse—the part of the neuron that releases neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. It typically refers to the axon terminal of the transmitting neuron, which contains synaptic vesicles loaded with neurotransmitter and a specialized membrane region known as the active zone. The presynaptic terminal communicates with the postsynaptic cell by releasing chemical signals that bind to receptors on the neighboring cell.

The release mechanism begins when an action potential arrives at the presynaptic terminal, causing a depolarization that opens voltage-gated calcium channels. The ensuing Ca2+ influx triggers the fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic membrane through SNARE proteins, resulting in exocytosis of neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft. Vesicles are docked and primed at the active zone, allowing rapid, graded release in response to neuronal activity.

Following release, neurotransmitters are cleared from the synaptic cleft by diffusion, enzymatic degradation, or reuptake into the presynaptic terminal via specific transporters. Endocytosis retrieves vesicular membranes and biogenesis processes recycle them for subsequent rounds of release.

Presynaptinen function is subject to modulation by autoreceptors and neuromodulators that regulate release probability and timing. It contributes to short-term plasticity, such as facilitation or depression, and long-term changes in synaptic strength, which underpin learning and memory. The presynaptic side operates in concert with the postsynaptic apparatus to determine the efficacy and dynamics of synaptic signaling.
