Preservatietoestand

Preservatietoestand is a Dutch term that refers to the preservation status of cultural heritage objects, buildings, monuments and other tangible heritage. It describes the current condition of a heritage item and the extent to which it conforms to the statutory and professional requirements for conservation.

The assessment of preservatietoestand is carried out according to national regulations and guidelines issued by the Dutch Ministry of Culture and the Heritage Agency. Assessors examine structural soundness, material composition, historical value, integrity of the original fabric and any alterations that have taken place over time. The results are often classified into categories such as well preserved, partially preserved, needing urgent restoration or at risk of loss. These categories determine the level of protection, the appropriate conservation measures and the eligibility for public funding or tax incentives.

Preservatietoestand is used by municipal authorities, heritage organizations, property owners and insurers to plan maintenance plans and restoration projects. A documented preservation status is also required for registration in the Dutch Inventory of Cultural Heritage and for inclusion in UNESCO or national heritage lists.
