Preseries

Preseries is a term used to refer to data, observations, or content that precedes the main time series, production run, or sequence to which it is later compared or modeled. In statistics and data science, preseries data provide initial conditions or baselines that inform model fitting, initialization, and seasonal adjustment. Analysts may use historical records, baseline measurements, or synthetic data from preseries to initialize forecasting models such as ARIMA or state-space approaches, helping to reduce edge effects when the first official observation is recorded. The quality and provenance of preseries are important, and analysts typically document its source, measurement methods, and any differences from the primary series.

In media production, preseries can refer to content produced before a series is officially ordered or publicly released, including pilot episodes, test shoots, concept reels, or early development material. These materials can guide creative direction and help determine whether to proceed with a full series, but they are generally not considered part of the finished program.

Preseries can present challenges for analysis and interpretation because it may deviate from later data in scale, instrumentation, or context.
