Preganglionaarsetelt refers to a stage in the development of the nervous system where a neuron has an axon that extends from the central nervous system towards a ganglion, but has not yet synapsed with a postganglionic neuron. This term is primarily used in the context of the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary bodily functions.

In the sympathetic nervous system, preganglionic neurons originate in the thoracic and lumbar regions of the spinal cord. Their axons travel to sympathetic ganglia, which are clusters of nerve cell bodies located along the vertebral column or in the abdominal cavity. These preganglionic axons release acetylcholine as their neurotransmitter.

In the parasympathetic nervous system, preganglionic neurons originate in the brainstem and the sacral region of the spinal cord. Their axons extend to parasympathetic ganglia, which are typically located close to or within the walls of the target organs. Like their sympathetic counterparts, parasympathetic preganglionic neurons also release acetylcholine.

The term "preganglionic" highlights the role of these neurons as the first part of a two-neuron pathway that transmits signals from the central nervous system to effector organs. The synapse between the preganglionic axon terminal and the postganglionic neuron's dendrites or cell body is a crucial junction where the signal is relayed and often modified before reaching its final destination.
