Preadaptation

Preadaptation is a concept in evolutionary biology that refers to the process by which an organism's traits become better suited to a new environment before the organism actually encounters that environment. This phenomenon is often observed in species that have evolved in one ecological niche and then move into a new one, where their existing traits provide a selective advantage.

Similarly, some species of birds that live in open habitats have evolved long legs and feet, which are also advantageous for species that live in dense vegetation.
