It is used primarily to describe events that happened in the past and are now completed. While the Perfekt (present perfect) is more prevalent in spoken German for past events, the Präteritum maintains its importance for specific verbs, especially modal verbs (like können, dürfen, müssen, sollen, wollen, mögen) and auxiliary verbs (haben, sein, werden), as well as verbs of saying and knowing (sagen, wissen). In these cases, the Präteritum often sounds more natural in everyday conversation.

The formation of the Präteritum varies depending on whether the verb is regular (weak) or irregular (strong). Regular verbs typically add "-te" to the stem, followed by the personal ending. For example, "spielen" becomes "spielte." Irregular verbs often undergo a stem vowel change and may have different endings. For instance, "gehen" becomes "ging." Understanding these conjugation patterns is crucial for accurate German grammar.
