Pozitronemissziós

Pozitronemissziós refers to the process of emitting positrons. A positron is the antiparticle of an electron, having the same mass but a positive electric charge. Positron emission is a key phenomenon in certain types of radioactive decay, specifically beta-plus decay. In beta-plus decay, a proton within an atomic nucleus transforms into a neutron, releasing a positron and an electron neutrino. This process typically occurs in proton-rich isotopes.

The emitted positron travels through the surrounding material. Due to its antiparticle nature, it quickly annihilates upon encountering an electron. This annihilation event results in the creation of two gamma-ray photons, which are emitted in opposite directions. The energy of these gamma rays is characteristic of the mass of the electron and positron.

This principle of positron emission and subsequent annihilation is the foundation of positron emission tomography (PET). In PET scans, a small amount of a positron-emitting radiotracer is introduced into the body. The radiotracer accumulates in specific tissues or organs. As the radiotracer decays, it emits positrons. These positrons then annihilate with electrons in the body, producing gamma rays. Detectors surrounding the patient capture these gamma rays, and sophisticated computer algorithms reconstruct an image that shows the distribution of the radiotracer, providing valuable information about metabolic activity and function.
