Potterygeometric refers to a style of pottery characterized by intricate geometric patterns and designs. This style emerged during the Geometric period of ancient Greek art, which spanned from around 900 to 700 BCE. The pottery from this era is notable for its use of black and white colors, achieved through the technique of slip painting. Artists would apply a slip, or liquid clay, to the pottery surface and then paint designs onto it with a brush. After firing, the painted areas would turn black, creating a striking contrast with the natural red or orange color of the clay.

The geometric designs on this pottery often included meanders, chevrons, triangles, and other abstract patterns. These motifs were typically arranged in horizontal bands around the vessel. The style evolved over time, with early examples featuring simple, repetitive patterns, and later works incorporating more complex and varied designs. Potterygeometric also saw the depiction of human figures and animals, although these were often stylized and integrated into the overall geometric composition.

This pottery style was not only used for functional vessels like amphorae, kraters, and cups but also for funerary urns and other ceremonial objects.
