Potmaat

Potmaat is a term used in horticulture, particularly in Dutch-speaking contexts, to denote the size of a plant pot. It is typically expressed as the inner diameter of the pot opening in centimeters and serves as a practical descriptor for root space and soil volume.

Measurement and standard sizes

The potmaat refers to the internal diameter at the top rim. The actual capacity of a pot also depends on its depth and shape, so two pots with the same diameter may hold different volumes. In practice, nurseries and garden centers list common potmaten such as 6 cm, 9 cm, 12 cm, 15 cm, 20 cm, and larger, with variations between plastic, ceramic, and terracotta pots.

Usage and care implications

Choosing the correct potmaat is important for plant health. The pot should provide enough space for the plant’s root system without being excessively large. When transplanting, gardeners typically move up to the next standard potmaat, or to a noticeably larger size if roots are crowded. Oversized pots can lead to waterlogging and root rot if drainage is insufficient, while undersized pots can restrict growth and promote root binding.
