Potenciálfüggvényben, also known as potential function or potential energy function, is a concept in physics and mathematics that describes the potential energy of a system as a function of its position. In classical mechanics, a potential function V(x) is defined such that the negative gradient of V gives the force acting on a particle. Mathematically, this is expressed as F = -∇V, where F is the force and ∇V is the gradient of the potential function. This relationship allows the potential function to be used to determine the work done by a force as a particle moves from one position to another.

Potential functions are particularly useful in conservative systems, where the work done by a force depends only on the initial and final positions of the particle, not on the path taken. In electromagnetism, potential functions are used to describe the electric and magnetic fields. The electric potential function φ is related to the electric field E by E = -∇φ, and the magnetic vector potential A is related to the magnetic field B by B = ∇ × A. These relationships allow the potential functions to be used to calculate the work done by the electric and magnetic forces.
