PostLithuanian

PostLithuanian refers to the period in Lithuanian history following the end of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This era is generally considered to begin with the Third Partition of the Commonwealth in 1795, which effectively dissolved the state, and extends through the 19th century, marked by foreign rule and national awakening.

Following the partitions, Lithuania was largely absorbed by the Russian Empire, with some territories falling under Prussian (later German) control. The 19th century was characterized by attempts to suppress Lithuanian national identity and culture by the occupying powers. Despite these efforts, a significant national revival movement emerged, fueled by intellectuals, writers, and clergy who sought to preserve and promote the Lithuanian language, history, and traditions. Key figures and events of this period include the January Uprising of 1863, which, though brutally suppressed, highlighted the desire for independence, and the clandestine publication of Lithuanian-language books and periodicals, which played a crucial role in fostering national consciousness. The eventual re-establishment of an independent Lithuania in 1918 marked the end of the postLithuanian period and the beginning of a new chapter in the nation's history.
