In a positional number system, such as the decimal system (base-10), each digit's value is determined by its place. For example, in the number 345, the digit '5' is in the ones place, giving it a value of 5 * 10^0, which is 5. The digit '4' is in the tens place, with a value of 4 * 10^1, or 40. The digit '3' is in the hundreds place, representing 3 * 10^2, or 300. The total value of the number is the sum of these positional values: 300 + 40 + 5 = 345.

The concept of positional values allows for a compact and efficient representation of numbers. Without it, each distinct quantity might require a unique symbol, leading to cumbersome notation. Positional values enable the use of a limited set of digits to represent an infinite range of numbers. Different number bases, such as binary (base-2) or hexadecimal (base-16), also operate on the principle of positional values, with the base determining the multiplier for each position.
