Porttiruiskutuksessa, commonly translated as "port flooding" or "door flooding," is a theoretical cybersecurity attack. It is a type of denial-of-service (DoS) attack that targets network services accessible through specific ports on a server. The objective of port flooding is to overwhelm a target system by sending a large volume of connection requests to a particular port, making the service on that port unavailable to legitimate users.

This attack typically involves sending numerous connection requests, often without completing the full handshake process required for a stable connection. The server's resources, such as memory and processing power, are consumed by managing these incomplete requests. This exhaustion of resources prevents the server from responding to new, legitimate connection attempts, effectively denying service.

The attack can be launched from a single source (a simple DoS attack) or from multiple distributed sources (a distributed denial-of-service or DDoS attack) to increase its effectiveness and make it harder to trace. Common ports targeted include those used by web servers (like port 80 for HTTP and port 443 for HTTPS), FTP servers (port 21), or other commonly exploited services. Defenses against port flooding include using firewalls to block suspicious traffic patterns, implementing rate limiting to restrict the number of connections from a single IP address, and employing intrusion detection systems to identify and mitigate such attacks.
