The etymology of Portoghesis is in-universe; it is presented as a constructed portmanteau combining Porto- (a reference to port or origin) and gēsis (a suffix drawn from Greek for origin or creation). In-world explanations sometimes frame the term as signaling a genesis of new cultural forms rather than a single, uniform phenomenon.
