Portalella

Portalella is a genus of small, marine gastropod mollusks belonging to the family Ovulidae, commonly known as ovulids or cowries. These snails are characterized by their egg-shaped shells, which are typically smooth and glossy. Unlike some other ovulids, Portalella shells are often quite small, with some species measuring less than a centimeter in length. The shells lack external teeth and typically have a narrow aperture. The external surface of the shell can vary in color and pattern, often displaying shades of white, cream, or pale yellow, sometimes with subtle markings.

These gastropods are found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, inhabiting a range of marine environments, including coral reefs and sandy bottoms. Portalella species are known to be carnivorous, feeding primarily on soft corals and gorgonians. They achieve this by using their radula, a ribbon-like structure with teeth, to scrape or bore into their prey. The relationship between Portalella and its host cnidarians can sometimes be very specific, with certain species of snail only feeding on particular types of coral. Reproduction in Portalella follows the general pattern for marine gastropods, involving external fertilization and the release of egg masses. The larval stage is planktonic, allowing for dispersal throughout the ocean.
