Porised is a term used in materials science and related disciplines to refer to a material that has been rendered porous, or to the process by which porosity is introduced. It is a relatively uncommon neologism and is not widely standardized in dictionaries; in many contexts the concept is described as “porous” or as a porosity-enhancing treatment.

Definition and scope: To porise a solid means to create void spaces within its structure in a controlled way, producing interconnected pores with a specific size distribution. This increases porosity, permeability, and surface area, enabling fluid or gas transport, catalytic activity, or tissue integration.

Methods and materials: Porising techniques include gas foaming, particulate leaching (salt or sugar templating), phase separation, chemical or electrochemical etching, templating, and sacrificial templating. Porised materials are common in ceramics, polymers, carbon-based systems, and composites, as well as in geological and soil contexts where porosity affects fluid flow.

Characterization: Porosity is measured as a void volume fraction and is influenced by pore size distribution and connectivity. Typical characterization methods include mercury intrusion porosimetry, gas adsorption (BET), micro-computed tomography, and gravimetric porosity assessment.

Applications and examples: A porised polymer scaffold for tissue engineering features interconnected pores suitable for cell infiltration. Porised ceramic foams provide lightweight, high-surface-area supports for filtration, catalysis, or thermal insulation. The term remains primarily used in scholarly and technical literature and is not widely adopted outside specialist contexts.
