Popfiltrit

Popfiltrit, or pop filters, are devices placed in front of a microphone to reduce plosive consonants such as p, b, t, and k and to protect the microphone from saliva. They are common in vocal recording, broadcasting, and podcasting.

Construction and variants: Most pop filters consist of a circular or oval screen made of metal or nylon mesh, mounted on a flexible gooseneck with a clamp that attaches to a microphone stand. Some models use two-layer or finely woven mesh; others incorporate a foam windscreen alternative. The mounting can be clamp-on or threaded; gooseneck length allows distance adjustment.

How they work: The filter spreads and slows the airflow from speech, reducing the impact pressure on the microphone capsule and smoothing the transient plosive burst. While primarily for plosives, they can also marginally affect high-frequency response if placed very close; proper technique minimizes any tonal change.

Usage: Place the filter about 2 to 5 cm (1-2 inches) from the mouth and adjust so that strong bursts still reach the screen, not the mic. Maintain a consistent distance and angle during recording. They do not replace good mic technique; if plosives persist, increase mouth distance or adjust mic position, or use a foam windscreen in combination.

Maintenance and considerations: Clean the screen periodically with a dry cloth; avoid moisture buildup; replace damaged or deformed filters. Popfiltrit are inexpensive, portable, and compatible with most cardioid and condenser microphones; choice depends on mic size, bandwidth, and personal preference.
