Popeye

Popeye the Sailor is a fictional cartoon character created by Elzie Crisler Segar. He first appeared in the daily comic strip Thimble Theatre on January 17, 1929, and soon became the strip’s central figure. The character is a sailor known for his superhuman strength, which comes from eating spinach.

Popeye is typically depicted with a muscular forearm, a squint, and a pipe. He speaks with a rough, folksy dialect and often uses exclamations such as “I yam what I yam” and “That’s all I can stands; I can’t stands no more.” His love interest is Olive Oyl, and his primary adversary is Bluto (also known as Brutus in some continuities). Wimpy is a friend who is fond of hamburgers.

Popeye appeared in a long-running series of theatrical animated shorts produced by Fleischer Studios beginning in 1933, which helped cement his popularity. Later cartoons were produced by Famous Studios. The character has appeared in television series, comic books, video games, and feature films, including the 1980 live-action film directed by Robert Altman and starring Robin Williams as Popeye.

Popeye is owned by King Features Syndicate, a subsidiary of Hearst Communications, which distributes the character in newspapers and multimedia. The spinach motif contributed to popular culture and is often cited as a defining element of the character.
