Polümeriseerimisviis refers to the method or process by which monomers are converted into polymers. This transformation involves the linking of many small monomer molecules to form a long chain or network polymer. The specific mechanism of polymerization dictates the type of polymer formed and its properties.

There are several primary polymerization mechanisms, broadly categorized into chain-growth polymerization and step-growth polymerization. Chain-growth polymerization, also known as addition polymerization, typically involves an initiator that generates a reactive species, such as a free radical, cation, or anion. This reactive species then adds monomers sequentially to the growing chain. Examples include free radical polymerization and anionic polymerization.

Step-growth polymerization, or condensation polymerization, involves reactions between monomers that have functional groups. These reactions occur step-by-step, often with the elimination of a small molecule like water or methanol. The polymer chain grows by the reaction of functional groups on monomers, oligomers, or polymers. Polyesters and polyamides are often formed through step-growth polymerization.

Other polymerization methods exist, such as ring-opening polymerization, where cyclic monomers are opened and linked to form a polymer chain. The choice of polymerization method is crucial for controlling molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, branching, and stereochemistry, all of which significantly influence the final polymer's physical and chemical characteristics. Factors such as temperature, pressure, solvent, and catalyst play vital roles in directing the polymerization process and achieving desired polymer properties.
