Polümerisatsioonidele

Polümerisatsioonidele refers to polymerizations in Estonian. Polymerization is a process where small molecules called monomers join together to form a long chain molecule called a polymer. This process is fundamental to the creation of plastics, synthetic fibers, and many other materials essential to modern life. There are several types of polymerization reactions, broadly categorized into addition polymerization and condensation polymerization.

Addition polymerization typically involves monomers with double or triple bonds. These bonds break, and the monomers link together end-to-end without the loss of any atoms. Polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are common examples of polymers formed through addition polymerization. The reaction often requires a catalyst or initiator to start the chain growth.

Condensation polymerization, on the other hand, involves the reaction between monomers that have specific functional groups. When these monomers join, a small molecule, such as water or methanol, is eliminated as a byproduct. Polyesters, polyamides (like nylon), and polycarbonates are formed via condensation polymerization. This method is used to create a wide range of materials with diverse properties, from strong fibers to durable plastics. The control over reaction conditions, such as temperature and pressure, is crucial for achieving the desired molecular weight and properties of the final polymer.
