Polyyyppikorallit

Polyyyppikorallit are a group of marine invertebrates belonging to the class Anthozoa, which also includes sea anemones. They are characterized by their colonial growth form, where individual polyps secrete a hard, calcareous exoskeleton. These exoskeletons often fuse together to form large, complex structures that are the basis of coral reefs. The polyps themselves are small, typically a few millimeters to a centimeter in size, and possess a cylindrical body with a mouth surrounded by tentacles.

These animals are found in oceans worldwide, from shallow tropical waters to the deep sea. Many species of polyyyppikorallit live in symbiotic relationships with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae. These algae reside within the coral tissues and provide the coral with energy through photosynthesis, while the coral offers the algae protection and nutrients. This symbiosis is crucial for the vibrant colors and the ability of many corals to thrive in nutrient-poor tropical waters.
