Polystyrenit

Polystyrenit is a Finnish term that refers to expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, a rigid and closed-cell insulation material produced from polystyrene beads. The process involves heating polystyrene beads containing an expansion agent, causing them to expand and fuse together into blocks. These blocks are then cut into sheets or shapes for various applications.

Polystyrenit is widely used in construction for thermal insulation in walls, roofs, and floors due to its excellent insulating properties, low thermal conductivity, and resistance to moisture. It is also lightweight, making it easy to handle and install. Beyond construction, polystyrenit finds use in packaging to protect fragile items during transport, as buoyancy material in marine applications, and in the production of disposable cups and containers.

While effective as an insulator, polystyrenit is flammable and can release toxic fumes when burned. Its long-term environmental impact is also a consideration, as it is not readily biodegradable and can persist in the environment for hundreds of years. Recycling programs exist for polystyrenit, but collection and processing can be challenging. The material's properties make it a versatile and cost-effective choice for many industries, balancing its utility with environmental considerations.
