Polysilylene

Polysilylene is a class of silicon-based polymers characterized by a backbone composed of repeating silicon atoms. These polymers differ from the more common silicones (polysiloxanes) in that they lack oxygen atoms directly bonded to the silicon chain. Instead, the silicon atoms are linked to each other, forming a direct Si-Si bond. Side groups attached to these silicon atoms can vary widely, influencing the polymer's properties.

The synthesis of polysilylenes typically involves the reductive coupling of organohalosilanes, often using alkali metals like sodium. This process leads to the formation of the silicon-silicon chain. The resulting polymers can exhibit a range of physical characteristics depending on the nature of the substituents on the silicon atoms. These substituents can include alkyl, aryl, or even more complex organic groups.

Polysilylenes have garnered interest for several potential applications.
