Etymology and scope: The term fuses polysemy—the linguistic fact that a single form can encode several related meanings—with myth, referring to traditional narratives that convey cultural values. In polysemythe analysis, a token such as a word, symbol, or figure is not treated as possessing a single meaning or as merely symbolic; rather, it acquires a constellation of senses that are culturally legible across contexts and time.

Analytical approach: Researchers might track sense inventories across corpora, map mythic associations, and examine how readers activate different readings in response to context. The framework is used to illuminate how mythic motifs migrate through language and how polysemantic meanings accumulate symbolic charge.
