Polymeeristymismenetelmiä, or polymerization methods, are chemical processes used to synthesize polymers from monomers. These methods are crucial for creating a vast array of materials with diverse properties. Broadly, polymerization can be categorized into two main types: chain-growth polymerization and step-growth polymerization.

Chain-growth polymerization, often referred to as addition polymerization, involves monomers adding to an active site on a growing polymer chain. This process typically proceeds through three stages: initiation, propagation, and termination. Initiation involves the formation of an active center, such as a free radical, cation, or anion. Propagation is the rapid addition of monomers to this active center, extending the polymer chain. Termination occurs when the active center is deactivated, ending the chain growth. Common examples include free radical polymerization, anionic polymerization, and cationic polymerization.

Step-growth polymerization, also known as condensation polymerization, involves monomers reacting with each other to form dimers, trimers, and longer oligomers. These oligomers then react with each other or with monomers to form the final polymer. Unlike chain-growth polymerization, step-growth polymerization does not necessarily require an active center, and polymer chains grow gradually throughout the reaction mixture. This method often involves the formation of small molecules, such as water or methanol, as byproducts. Examples include polyesterification and polyamidation.

The choice of polymerization method depends on the specific monomer, desired polymer structure, molecular weight, and physical properties. Factors like temperature, pressure, catalyst, and solvent play significant roles in controlling the reaction rate and polymer characteristics.
