Polyfunctionalisation
Polyfunctionalisation is a chemical term that describes the process of introducing multiple functional groups into a molecule. These functional groups are specific atoms or groups of atoms within a molecule that are responsible for its characteristic chemical reactions. In polyfunctionalisation, two or more such groups are added to the same molecule. This can occur in a single step or through a series of sequential reactions. The resulting polyfunctionalized molecules often exhibit enhanced or novel properties compared to their monofunctional counterparts. For example, a molecule with multiple hydroxyl groups might be more soluble in water or have a greater capacity for hydrogen bonding.
The strategic introduction of multiple functional groups is a cornerstone of organic synthesis. It allows chemists
