This process results in the formation of a long polymer chain with repeating ester units.

A classic example is the reaction between ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid to produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a widely used plastic for bottles and fibers. This polycondensation reaction releases a small molecule, usually water or methanol, as a byproduct for each ester bond formed. The reaction can be catalyzed by acids or metal compounds to increase the rate and yield.

Alternatively, polyesters can be synthesized through the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters, such as lactones. This method is particularly useful for producing polyesters with specific properties and is often employed for biodegradable polymers. The choice of monomers, reaction conditions, and catalysts significantly influences the molecular weight, structure, and ultimately, the physical and chemical properties of the resulting polyester.
