Polyelectrolyttes
Polyelectrolytes are polymers where a significant fraction of the repeating units contains ionizable groups, making the polymer chains charged. These charged groups can be either positive (cationic polyelectrolytes) or negative (anionic polyelectrolytes). They can also contain both positive and negative charges within the same chain, in which case they are called polyampholytes. The counterions, which are oppositely charged small ions, are electrostatically bound to the charged polymer backbone to maintain overall charge neutrality in the solution.
