Polycentric describes systems in which multiple centers of activity, power, or influence exist rather than a single centralized core. The word derives from poly- meaning many and kentron meaning center, a usage common in geography, political science, and urban studies.

In urban planning and regional development, a polycentric city or region features several hubs of economic and social activity rather than a single downtown core. This can reduce commute times, distribute growth, and improve accessibility, but it also requires cross-jurisdictional coordination and investment in transportation and infrastructure to connect centers.

In governance and public administration, polycentric governance describes arrangements in which decision making occurs across multiple overlapping authorities at local, regional, national, or transnational levels. Advocates, notably Elinor Ostrom, argue that polycentric systems encourage experimentation, local accountability, and resilience, though they risk coordination costs, fragmentation, and unequal service provision.

In linguistics, polycentric languages are those with multiple standard varieties rather than a single normative form. Examples include English, with distinct American, British, and other conventions, and some regional forms of Spanish or Arabic. The concept emphasizes sociolinguistic variation and the plurality of language standards across communities.

Other uses exist in organizational theory and design, where polycentric approaches aim to balance local autonomy with shared goals. Critics note potential drawbacks such as coordination challenges, duplication of efforts, and fragmentation across centers; supporters emphasize adaptability, local relevance, and resilience.
