Polybromibifenyyli

Polybromibifenyyli (PBB) is a class of brominated aromatic compounds that were used as flame retardants. They are structurally similar to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), with bromine atoms replacing chlorine atoms on the biphenyl structure. PBBs were manufactured by the bromination of biphenyl, resulting in a mixture of congeners with varying degrees of bromination.

These compounds were primarily used in plastics, textiles, and electronic equipment to reduce flammability. Their effectiveness as flame retardants stemmed from their ability to interfere with the combustion process. However, PBBs, like PCBs, are persistent organic pollutants (POPs). This means they do not easily degrade in the environment and can accumulate in living organisms, including humans, through the food chain.

Concerns about their environmental persistence and potential health effects, including endocrine disruption and carcinogenicity, led to widespread bans and restrictions on PBB production and use. Despite these restrictions, legacy contamination remains a concern, and PBBs can still be found in older products and in the environment. Remediation efforts are ongoing in areas where PBBs were manufactured or heavily used. Research continues to monitor their presence and assess long-term health impacts.
