Polttoaineenpaineensäädin, known in English as a fuel pressure regulator, is a crucial component in internal combustion engines. Its primary function is to maintain a consistent and appropriate fuel pressure within the fuel injection system. This ensures that the fuel injectors receive fuel at the correct pressure, allowing for precise fuel delivery into the combustion chamber.

The regulator typically works by using a diaphragm that is spring-loaded. Fuel pressure acts on one side of the diaphragm, while the spring and engine vacuum (or a controlled electronic signal) act on the other. When fuel pressure rises above the set point, the diaphragm is pushed against the spring, opening a return port that directs excess fuel back to the fuel tank or a fuel rail. Conversely, if the fuel pressure drops, the spring pushes the diaphragm back, closing the return port and increasing the pressure.

Maintaining stable fuel pressure is vital for optimal engine performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions control. Incorrect fuel pressure, whether too high or too low, can lead to various drivability issues such as rough idling, hesitation, poor acceleration, or even engine damage. Modern vehicles often utilize electronically controlled fuel pressure regulators that can adjust pressure dynamically based on engine load and operating conditions, further enhancing efficiency and performance.
