Polttoaineelementit, often translated as fuel cells, are electrochemical devices that convert chemical energy from a fuel into electricity through a chemical reaction with an oxidizing agent. Unlike batteries, fuel cells do not run down or require recharging; they produce electricity as long as fuel and an oxidizer are supplied. The most common fuel is hydrogen, and the most common oxidizer is oxygen.

The basic principle of a fuel cell involves an anode, a cathode, and an electrolyte. At the anode, the fuel is oxidized, releasing electrons and ions. The electrolyte allows the ions to pass through to the cathode, while the electrons are forced to travel through an external circuit, generating an electric current. At the cathode, the fuel ions combine with the oxidizer and the electrons to form a byproduct, often water.

Different types of fuel cells exist, categorized by the electrolyte they use and their operating temperature. These include Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells, Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs), Alkaline Fuel Cells (AFCs), Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cells (PAFCs), and Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFCs). Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages regarding efficiency, cost, and application.

Fuel cells offer several advantages, including high efficiency, low emissions (especially when using hydrogen as fuel), and quiet operation. They are being developed for a wide range of applications, from powering vehicles and portable electronics to providing electricity for buildings and grid-scale power generation. Challenges remain in terms of cost, durability, and the widespread availability of hydrogen infrastructure.
