Poliorktikos

Poliorktikos is the transliteration of the Greek adjective πολιορκητικός (poliorktikós), meaning siege-related or pertaining to besieging a city. The root term comes from poliorkēin, to besiege, and poliorkētēs, a besieger. In English-language usage, related forms include poliorcetic (adj.) and poliorcetics (n.), which denote the art or science of siege warfare, including tactics, engineering, fortifications, and siege engines.

Historically, poliorktikos and its derivatives describe both the act of besieging and the broader field of siegecraft. In classical and Hellenistic contexts, the term appears in discussions of military operations where besieging cities was central. The epithet Poliorcetes, literally “the Besieger,” was borne by Demetrius I of Macedon, reflecting his fame for conducting sieges. Beyond antiquity, the concept persisted in Byzantine and later European military theory under the label poliorcetics, referring to treatises and practical guides on conducting sieges, breaching fortifications, and related engineering techniques.
