Polikarpovs

Polikarpovs refers to a series of Soviet fighter aircraft designed by the Polikarpov Design Bureau. Nikolai Polikarpov, a prominent Soviet aircraft designer, led the bureau, and many of his successful designs bore his name. The most famous among these is the Polikarpov I-15, a biplane fighter that saw extensive service in the Spanish Civil War and World War II. It was known for its agility and maneuverability, earning it the nickname "Chato" (snub-nosed) by Spanish Republicans.

Another significant aircraft was the Polikarpov I-16, a monoplane fighter that was a revolutionary design for its time. Introduced in the mid-1930s, it was one of the first low-wing monoplane fighters with retractable landing gear and a fully enclosed cockpit. The I-16 served with distinction in various conflicts, including the Spanish Civil War, the Battles of Khalkhin Gol, and the early stages of World War II. Despite its advanced features, its speed and maneuverability were eventually surpassed by later German and Japanese designs.

The Polikarpov Design Bureau also produced other aircraft, including bombers and reconnaissance planes, but their fighter designs are what they are most remembered for.
