Polarisaatiotyyppejä refers to the different ways in which light waves can be oriented. When light is unpolarized, its electric field vectors oscillate randomly in all directions perpendicular to the direction of propagation. However, under certain conditions, light can become polarized, meaning its electric field vectors are restricted to a specific orientation.

The most common types of polarization are linear, circular, and elliptical. Linear polarization occurs when the electric field vectors oscillate along a single straight line. This can happen when light reflects off a surface at a specific angle, known as Brewster's angle, or when it passes through a polarizing filter.

Circular polarization is a more complex form where the electric field vector rotates as the light wave propagates. This rotation can be either clockwise (right-circularly polarized) or counterclockwise (left-circularly polarized). Circularly polarized light can be thought of as the superposition of two linearly polarized waves with equal amplitude and a phase difference of 90 degrees.

Elliptical polarization is the most general case and encompasses both linear and circular polarization as special instances. In elliptical polarization, the electric field vector traces out an ellipse as the light wave propagates. This occurs when the two perpendicular components of the electric field have different amplitudes or a phase difference other than 0, 90, or 180 degrees.
