Polarisaatioanalyyseissä, commonly referred to as polarization analysis, is a technique used in various scientific fields to measure and interpret the polarization state of light. Light, being an electromagnetic wave, possesses a property called polarization, which describes the orientation of its electric field oscillations. Polarization analysis allows researchers to determine whether light is unpolarized, linearly polarized, circularly polarized, or elliptically polarized, and to quantify the degree and orientation of this polarization.

The process typically involves passing light through a polarization optical element, such as a polarizer or a wave plate, and then measuring the intensity of the transmitted light with a detector. By rotating the optical element or using a combination of elements and measuring the intensity at different orientations, a complete description of the light's polarization state can be obtained. This information is often represented using Stokes parameters or the Poincaré sphere.

Polarization analysis finds applications in diverse areas. In remote sensing, it can reveal information about the surface properties of materials, such as roughness and composition, which affect how light is reflected and scattered. In microscopy, it enhances contrast and can identify specific structures or molecules based on their interaction with polarized light. Astronomy utilizes polarization analysis to study magnetic fields in stars and interstellar dust, as well as to investigate the properties of exoplanetary atmospheres. Furthermore, it plays a role in optical communication, material science for characterizing optical properties, and even in biological imaging for studying tissue structures.
