Polümeriseerimisviisist refers to the method or mechanism by which polymerization occurs. Polymerization is a process where small molecules, called monomers, chemically combine to form very large molecules, called polymers. There are several primary ways this can happen, each with distinct characteristics.

One common method is chain-growth polymerization. In this type, a monomer is added to a growing polymer chain, typically initiated by a reactive species such as a free radical, cation, or anion. The monomer adds rapidly to the active site, and the chain continues to grow until termination occurs. Examples include free radical polymerization of ethylene to polyethylene or vinyl chloride to polyvinyl chloride.

Another major type is step-growth polymerization. In this mechanism, monomers react with each other to form dimers, trimers, and then longer oligomers. These oligomers then react with each other or with monomers to form the final polymer. Unlike chain-growth, chain termination is less common, and high molecular weight polymers are formed only when one of the reactants is nearly consumed. This method is often used to synthesize polyesters and polyamides.

Additionally, there are specialized polymerization methods like ring-opening polymerization, where cyclic monomers are opened and polymerized, and controlled polymerization techniques such as living polymerization, which allows for precise control over polymer architecture and molecular weight. The choice of polymerization method is crucial as it dictates the properties of the resulting polymer, including its molecular weight, branching, tacticity, and overall performance.
