Poistolämmityksestä, also known as waste heat recovery or heat recovery from exhaust air, refers to the process of capturing and reusing heat that would otherwise be lost into the environment. This is commonly applied in buildings, industrial processes, and even vehicles. The fundamental principle involves transferring thermal energy from a warmer, outgoing stream to a cooler, incoming stream.

In buildings, exhaust air from ventilation systems is a primary source for poistolämmitys. Heat exchangers, such as rotary heat exchangers or plate heat exchangers, are installed within the ventilation unit. As stale, warm indoor air is expelled, it passes through one side of the heat exchanger. Simultaneously, fresh, cold outdoor air enters through the other side. This significantly reduces the energy required by the heating system to bring the fresh air to the desired indoor temperature, leading to substantial energy savings and lower heating costs.
