Poistoilmalämpöpumppu, known in English as an exhaust air heat pump, is a type of air-source heat pump that utilizes the heat present in outgoing ventilation air from a building. These systems are designed to recover energy from the stale air that is normally expelled from a property. As the ventilation air is removed from the building, the heat pump extracts thermal energy from it before it is released outside. This recovered heat is then used to heat domestic hot water and, in many cases, to supplement the building's primary heating system.

The primary function of a poistoilmalämpöpumppu is to improve a building's energy efficiency and reduce heating costs. By capturing and reusing heat that would otherwise be wasted, it significantly lowers the demand on conventional heating sources such as electric heaters or boilers. The system typically consists of a ventilation unit that handles air exchange and a heat pump component that extracts and transfers heat. The extracted heat is often stored in a water tank for later use.

While they do require electricity to operate, their efficiency ratio means they produce more heat energy than the electrical energy they consume, leading to a net saving in overall energy usage.
