Poistoilmalämpöpumppu, often abbreviated as PELP, is a ventilation system that simultaneously heats and extracts indoor air. It is a type of heat pump that recovers heat energy from the outgoing stale air and uses it to heat the fresh incoming air or to provide heat for domestic hot water. This process significantly reduces the energy required for heating compared to conventional systems.

The core principle of a poistoilmalämpöpumppu involves a heat exchanger where the outgoing warm air passes over a refrigerant circuit. This transfers heat from the outgoing air to the refrigerant, which then circulates to a compressor. The compressor increases the temperature and pressure of the refrigerant, allowing it to effectively transfer heat to the building's heating system, such as radiators or underfloor heating, and also to the domestic hot water tank. After releasing its heat, the refrigerant is cooled and depressurized, ready to absorb more heat from the exhaust air.

These systems are designed for use in residential buildings and are particularly efficient in climates with significant heating demands. They contribute to energy savings and a reduced carbon footprint by utilizing the heat present in exhaust air, which would otherwise be lost. The installation typically involves an exhaust air duct system and connections to the building's heating and hot water circuits.
