The term is not widely standardized in formal theory and is often encountered in informal criticism, fan wikis, and screenplay notes, where hyphenated forms like plot-relevant are also common.

Elements deemed plotrelevant meet several criteria. They affect causality within the narrative, change a character’s goals or stakes, or alter the direction of the plot leads. By contrast, plot-irrelevant details contribute to mood, world-building, or background texture without altering the narrative trajectory. However, some details can be plotrelevant indirectly by enabling later developments or foreshadowing, even if their immediate appearance seems minor.
