Plazmaersítéses refers to a process involving plasma etching. Plasma is an ionized gas, a state of matter where atoms or molecules have been stripped of some of their electrons, creating a mixture of ions, electrons, and neutral particles. Plasma etching is a widely used technique in microfabrication, particularly in the semiconductor industry, for removing material from a surface in a highly controlled and directional manner.

The process typically takes place within a vacuum chamber where a gas, such as a fluorocarbon or chlorocarbon, is introduced and subjected to an electrical field. This field energizes the gas, creating a plasma. The reactive species within the plasma, often ions and free radicals, then interact with the surface of the substrate. These reactive species chemically react with the material to be etched, forming volatile byproducts. These byproducts are then pumped away, effectively removing the material.

Plasma etching offers several advantages over traditional wet etching methods. It provides a high degree of anisotropy, meaning it etches vertically with minimal undercutting, which is crucial for creating fine features in microelectronic devices. The process is also highly selective, allowing for the etching of specific materials while leaving others unaffected. Furthermore, it is a dry process, avoiding the use of liquid chemicals and the associated environmental concerns and disposal issues. Different types of plasma etching, such as reactive ion etching (RIE), exist, offering varying degrees of control and etching characteristics.
